Installments and Due Dates
The 2025-2026 property tax bills were mailed to property owners on August 15, 2025. There are two installments. The first installment must be paid no later than September 15, 2025 and the second installment must be paid no later than March 16, 2026. Payments will be accepted anytime but must be paid or postmarked by the due dates to avoid an 8% penalty.
Important to Know
- This is the only property tax bill you will receive. Please retain your bill for the second installment and your 2025 income tax filing.
- If your taxes are escrowed, please forward a copy to your lender and retain a copy for your records.
- If you do not receive your tax bill, please call the Town Office at 802-879-0413, option 6, or email clerk@essex.org.
Payment Options
- Mail or drop off your payment at the Town Office, 81 Main Street, Essex Jct., VT 05452 (please include the stub with your payment). Checks should be made payable to the Town of Essex. For your convenience, a drop-box is available 24/7 to the left of the front door (no cash please). Please include a self-addressed envelope if you would like a receipt mailed to you.
- Cash, check, or credit/debit cards are accepted at the Town Office. A convenience fee will be charged by the credit/debit vendor.*
- Pay online with a credit or debit card. A convenience fee will be charged by the credit/debit vendor.*
- Sign up for the free automatic tax payment program. Enroll by filling out the form below and send with a voided check to Town of Essex, Attn: Finance, 81 Main Street, Essex Jct., VT 05452. Installment amounts will be automatically deducted from your bank account on the due date.
*Credit/Debit card fees are 2.65%, $3.95 minimum. There is also an E-check option available. Paying by E-check includes a flat $1.95 convenience fee.
Late Penalty
Payments received or postmarked after the due date are considered delinquent and will incur an 8% penalty. Interest of 1% will be charged the 16th of each month beginning thirty days after the due date.
Abatement Request
Pursuant to 24 V.S.A. §1535, taxpayers have the right to seek relief from the Board of Abatement for the reasons outlined in statute. Request an abatement by completing the form below.
